Smart & Final set to begin Central Coast expansion with opening of San Luis Obispo store

Smart & Final

A California-based grocery chain is set to open several stores along the Central Coast in locations left vacant by Haggen last year.

The first store opening alone is expected to replace roughly 50 jobs that were lost as part of that mass-closure.

Smart & Final won the bid for five of those stores and plans to open the doors of its first new location this coming weekend in San Luis Obispo.

The stores will be called Smart & Final Extra. Marisol Marks is a spokesperson for the chain and says those concerned that another Haggen-like collapse could happen with such a large expansion—shouldn't be.

"We actually started opening Smart & Final Extra stores back in 2007, and so it's somewhat of a formula we found that works" said Marks. "Our team is very well versed at opening these stores and making sure that from day one we're putting our best foot forward."

The new extra stores will have an expanded produce section, organic products and an in-house bakery.

Smart & Final's first public grand opening of the new Central Coast locations is Wednesday, February 24 at 1321 Johnson Ave., San Luis Obispo.
