CSU officials say virtual learning to continue into fall terms

Cal Poly students may not be heading back to the San Luis Obispo campus in the fall, as there will be no in-person classes at California State University’s 23 schools next semester, according to the system's chancellor.

Students will continue to attend classes online for the fall, with some exceptions made for laboratory classes and training for students entering healthcare careers.

CSU Chancellor Timothy White made the announcement Tuesday that students will continue online instruction only.

“With respect to tuition and fees...we have not had that conversation yet because we are waiting to get to the [state government's] May Revise [budget] and have a better sense of the sort of costs that we're facing,” White said. “And so that'll be a conversation for us in the July board of trustees meeting.”

The announcement was made during Tuesday's virtual board of trustees meeting, and White says the fall semester will look different on the various CSU schools. While it is possible to put in safety measures at smaller campuses like the Maritime Academy, it is not possible on the system's large campuses like Cal Poly.

The California State University system is one of the largest public university systems in the country.

In addition to CSU schools, Central Coast community colleges like Alan Hancock have also announced that fall classes will be online-only.

After news stories published Chancellor White's remarks at Tuesday's trustee meeting, Cal Poly's vice president of student affairs Keith Humphrey tweeted that university president Jeffrey Armstrong will be releasing more details soon.

"Hang on everyone, we know you may have questions based on Chancellor White's announcement today," said Humphrey. "President Armstrong plans to update the campus community," later tonight or Wednesday.
