Los Osos Haggen store is one of several California locations to close

Jordan Bell, KCBX News

A Los Osos grocery store will shut its doors soon. The Regional Grocer Haggen announced today it will close or sell several of it locations throughout the west coast.

The struggling chain just opened its local stores this past spring. The Los Osos location is one of 18 Haggen stores to close in California. The company says store closures are part of a 'right-sizing' strategy.

“By making the tough choice to close and sell some stores, we will be able to invest in stores that have the potential to thrive under the Haggen banner,” said Haggen Pacific Southwest CEO Bill Shaner.

The closures follow a string of layoffs involving full-time food and general merchandise clerks, including several developmentally disabled employees on the Central Coast.

Haggen officials said they do not know how many jobs will be affected because of the closures.

The Los Osos store will continue to operate during what's called a 60-day closing process. Haggen is just one of two large grocery stores to service the Los Osos community.
