2016 Election Ballot Initiatives: Power to the People

Broadcast date: 9/29/16

With 17 measures on the California statewide ballot, for the upcoming November election, it is the longest list of state propositions on a single ballot since March of 2000. With hot button issues like marijuana legalization, the repeal of the death penalty, school funding, and gun laws before voters, just to name a few, it’s not just the decision whether to read the record setting 224-page voter guide that is daunting.

Join host Kris Kington Barker as she speaks with Dr. Sam Blakeslee, Founder of the Institute for Advanced Technology and Public Policyat Cal Poly, Tommy Gong San Luis Obispo County Clerk-Recorder, and Dr. Michael Latner, Director of the Cal Poly Master’s in Public Policy Program, as they walk us through the challenges of administering such a complex election, talk about direct democracy as a collective decision making tool, and its advantages and disadvantages, as well as review specific measures, and discuss what they seek to accomplish.
