Making Your Summer Meaningful: Bridging the Gap

Broadcast date: 6/29/2017

The most recent Vital Signs report showed that seniors over the age of 60 are the fastest growing group in the county, making up 25% of the population in 2015, up from 21% in 2010. The CDC reports that increased life expectancy, brought on by the success of public health interventions of the past century, will bring new challenges for community programs who will need to respond to an increased need created by this achievement, including the growing burden of chronic illnesses in United States, a higher number of disabilities and increased issues surrounding concerns care-giving and rising medical costs. As our aging population continues to increase, we will talk about how you (and your family) can be part of the solution to bridge the gaps in safety net services for seniors and help support aging in place.

Join host Kris Kington-Barker as she speaks with guests from Wilshire Health and Community Services, Kelly Donohue, Public Relations, and Traci Mello, Administrator and Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, as they discuss the growing older adult population on the Central Coast and how you can help make a difference to close the gap in the vital services that keep older adults from aging at home.

Central Coast Voices is sponsored by ACTION for Healthy Communities in collaboration with KCBX and made possible through underwriting by Joan Gellert-Sargen.

Kris Kington-Barker is co-host of Central Coast Voices, heard every Thursday on KCBX from 1:00—12:00 p.m. Kris has worked in healthcare fields ranging from mental health to hospital administration, and has served as a volunteer and board member for many Central Coast non-profit organizations.
