Central Coast Voices: A social basis of community care-San Luis Obispo’s unique hospice model

Advances in medical technology have made it possible for US citizens to live longer, and often with declining health or a life a limiting illness resulting in increasing gaps in services when they fail to meet the criteria for home health or Medicare certified hospice. Compounded by projections for 10,000 baby boomers to turn 65 every day, this is quickly becoming a health and caregiver crisis.

Hospice San Luis Obispo (SLO) County is one of only 23 Volunteer hospice agencies remaining in the U.S. today. They serve county residents who are facing a life-limiting illness, end of life or grief and accomplish this 100% on community donations, fundraising events, grants, bequests and planned gifts, and the time and talent of over 200 volunteers to serve thousands of individuals annually.

Join host Fred Monroe as he speaks with guests Kim Chartrand, RN and Care Manager for Hospice SLO County and Shannon McOuat, Volunteer Director with Hospice SLO County as they discuss this unique model and how it has been supporting SLO County residents since 1977.

Broadcast date: 1/15/20
