California Secretary of State aims to protect upcoming election from cyber attacks

California Secretary of State Alex Padilla said action is needed to protect the upcoming midterm elections from cybersecurity threats.

He said during the last presidential election, cyber-attackers looked for ways to hack the state's election system and spread misinformation online.

Speaking alongside federal and state law enforcement officials, Padilla said there's no evidence that hackers were successful in compromising that election.

But, “the persistence of cyber threats demands that we, elections officials, law enforcement and intelligence agencies, Congress, and, yes, the President not ignore but decisively act to protect our elections against these threats,” said Padilla.

The Legislature has already approved $134 million dollars to invest in new voting equipment and another $3 million dollars to establish a cybersecurity election office.
