Warning label for sugary drinks passes California Senate

UPDATE: May 29, 2014 at 6:12 p.m.

The California State Senate passed SB 1000 on a 21 to 13 vote. It's now headed to the Assembly.

Original story:

There is a push in Sacramento by a Central Coast politician to place warning labels on all bottles and cans of sugary drinks sold in the state.

State Senator Bill Monning represents all of San Luis Obispo and Santa Cruz Counties, and a portion of Monterey and Santa Clara Counties. He's the author of SB 1000, the Sugary Drink Safety Warning Act.

The State of California Safety Warning would simply read, "drinking beverages with added sugar(s) contributes to obesity, diabetes and tooth decay."

On Friday,  the California State Senate’s Appropriations Committee passed SB 1000 by a 5 to 2 vote, setting the legislation up for a vote by the full senate next week.
