August 22 is the last day of San Luis Obispo’s special election for Measure B-17. All vote-by-mail ballots must be turned in by 8 p.m.

Measure B-17 asks San Luis Obispo voters to repeal the city’s already-defunct rental housing inspection program. It also seeks to replace that program with an ordinance that permanently bans any similar rental inspection programs in the future.

San Luis Obispo County Clerk-Recorder Tommy Gong said of the 28,500 ballots sent out in late July, 7,400 have been returned. Those voters who haven’t mailed their ballots by 5 p.m. on Tuesday will need to drop it off at one of four locations. The county’s elections office is at 1055 Monterey Street. Ballots are also being accepted at the Zion Lutheran church on Foothill Boulevard, the Unity Church on Orcutt Road or the Laguna Lake mobile home park on Prefumo Canyon Road.

Gong said unofficial results will be available on the county’s website shortly after 8 p.m. Tuesday night. Gong expects to post an update on Thursday, and more official results by late next week.
