Isla Vista cliff fall sends man to hospital with major injuries

A young man was being treated Friday evening for major injuries he received during a roughly 40 foot fall from a cliff in Isla Vista earlier that afternoon.

The incident happened just before 4:00 p.m. as he was walking from one property to another when he leaned against a fence, which gave out, Santa Barbara County Fire Captain David Zaniboni told KCBX.

The Captain says the man suffered major injuries and was transferred to Cottage Hospital by ambulance.

It is not know whether alcohol played a role in the incident, according to Zaniboni.

Just one year ago, the Santa Barbara County Planning Commission approved the installation of fencing along the bluffs in Isla Vista, after a series of cliff falls brought the safety hazard to light.

Safety fencing was installed in April along the bluff properties that belong to Santa Barbara County and the Isla Vista Parks and Recreation District.

In February, UC Santa Barbara agreed to pay for building the permanent fencing and the County would take on the long-term maintenance.
