Nail salons and tattoo shops next on reopening schedule

The owners of San Luis Obispo County nail salons and tattoo parlors should start getting ready to reopen on or after June 19. That's the latest message from county health officials about the personal services sector.

“Business owners of that type ought to be taking a good look at the guidance, reviewing it, developing their risk assessment, their self-certification so that they are ready to move forward a week from today,” said Dr. Penny Borenstein of the San Luis Obispo County Public Health Department at a Friday afternoon briefing.

Borenstein said the state has issued guidance on personal services—including facials, waxing, skin care, piercing and massage therapy. As the county health officer, Borenstein needs to review the state rules and make them applicable for San Luis Obispo County, but she said she is confident that one of the last groups of businesses to reopen can do so soon.

On Friday, 12 business sectors reopened, spanning most areas of pre-pandemic life. SLO County residents can head this weekend to bars, casinos, museums, and local campgrounds. Movie theaters and gyms are also free to open their doors now, with a lot more cleaning and precautionary measures taken.

But, county officials continue to discourage out-of-county visitors, although vacation rentals and hotels can now open at full capacity, because in surrounding counties, infection rates are much higher.

Borenstein said at hospitals in Fresno, Sacramento, Imperial and San Joaquin counties, the coronavirus situation looks a lot different than SLO County's.

“We most worry about hospitalization impacts,” Borenstein said. “In many of those counties, their hospitals are now full with COVID-19 patients, so we very much are keeping a close eye on that.”

The number of confirmed cases in SLO County went up by 18 over the past two days. Despite recent mass gatherings in the form of protests, Borenstein says those are not necessarily the cause.

“We haven't been able to tie these new cases to any particular event or gathering, and they are spread across the entire community,” Borenstein said.

More testing sites are opening next week at the high school in Nipomo and the veteran’s hall in Morro Bay. Find more information and make appointments at ReadySLO.org.
