Crash closes stretch of Los Berros Road in Arroyo Grande

Peter Klein, Five Cities Fire

A stretch of Los Berros Road in Arroyo Grande opened to traffic in both directions Tuesday evening around 5:30, after being shut down for most of the day as crews worked to clean up a semi-truck roll-over crash.

The problems started just before 9:00 a.m. on Los Berros between Falcon Crest and Century Lane. The driver was unable to negotiate the road's curves, according to Five Cities Fire. The cab portion of the semi came to rest on Los Berros with the two trailers twisted off into the brush almost 10 feet below the road surface.

"The extreme weight of the vehicle's load, in addition to the size and precarious positioning presented a problem for emergency workers," said Peter Klein, spokesperson for Five Cities Fire. "Firefighters from both agencies worked to contain the diesel fuel which had spilled. Johnboy's Towing off-loaded as much fuel as possible to mitigate environmental impact before attempting to move the vehicle."

The driver was taken to a local hospital, but there was no word on his condition.

Utility cables were also affected by the crash, so an AT&T crew remained on site after the truck was removed to install a new pole and secure the wires. This kept a portion of the roadway closed for an additional couple of hours.
