Record number of hotel properties proposed for Paso Robles wine region

Steven Puglisi Architecture - San Luis Obispo

The City of Paso Robles is in the midst of a hotel boom with more properties before the planning department than at any time in the city's history.

Susan DiCarli is the Paso Robles Planning Manager and says while every hotel or resort property may not make it to fruition, the level of potential development is impressive.

"We're receiving more applications and more inquiries than we ever have before," said DiCarli. "We have, I think, seven or eight hotels in process right now. In addition to those though, we do also have an annexation request on the table, which may or may not go through, which includes an additional three more resorts."

The majority of planned projects have a hundred or more rooms, according to the planning manager.

The growing wine region plays a big role in the increased demand for tourist accommodations. Two wineries, Vina Robles and Robert Hall, are requesting zoning changes in order to build on-site boutique hotels.

The Ayers Resort on Buena Vista Road is expected to be finished in December, making it the first of the current projects to reach completion. The hotel building will include 169 guest rooms and suites that are "rotated to harmonize with the shape and energy of the terrain," according to the company.

Two others, the Oxford Suites hotel on 4th Street and a Marriott Residence Inn on South Vine Street, are both on track for likely approval, according to the city.
