Drivers along Highway 1 in San Luis Obispo and Monterey Counties will likely encounter some road closures Saturday as the Best Buddies event moves south from Carmel to San Simeon.
More than 1500 people taking part in the 11th Annual Best Buddies Challenge, which raises money for the non-profit organization Best Buddies International.
The organization pairs volunteer "buddies" with people who have intellectual disabilities.
This year's ride is bringing in $4.5 million, which is more than previous years according to organizers.
Former California First Lady Maria Shriver and current Lt. Governor Gavin Newsom are once again this year's honorary co-chairs.
“I am so incredibly proud that the Best Buddies Challenge: Hearst Castle is in its 11th year, and thrilled to serve as Honorary Co-Chair once again,” said Shriver. “Best Buddies is such an important organization because of its work to support individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) through friendship, employment and leadership roles.”
The California Highway Patrol will begin rolling closures on Highway 1 Saturday at 6:00 a.m. and is expected to wrap up the traffic control by 4:00 p.m. Delays may be as long as 15 minutes.
Participants will attend a barbecue and concert with Bruce Hornsby and the Noisemakers at the Hearst Castle Ranch.
