Highway 1

A portion of Highway 1 that has been closed since last year is set to reopen this summer.

Residents of San Luis Obispo County are now able to travel up to Big Sur thanks to a reopening of Highway 1.

An evacuation warning was issued to people in the Big Sur area, ahead of the forecasted heavy rain and thunderstorms. The warning stretches from north of Dolan Slide to Rocky Creek Slip.

The closure of Highway 1 on the Big Sur Coast has been extended further north as crews work to repair the road following two rockslides last week.

Caltrans says crews have successfully fixed a sinkhole that caused the closure of a section of Highway 1 in Big Sur this week. The southern closure has now been moved back to Limekiln State Park.

This year’s heavy storms caused landslides in Big Sur, closing most of Highway 1 in the area. Now, parts of the highway are expected to partially reopen in July — but Caltrans says there’s still one major slide delaying a full reopening.

There is ongoing work on Central Coast highways right now, both to repair winter storm damage and to make general improvements.

In today's KCBX News Update: CalTrans will conduct resupply convoys on Highway 1 in Big Sur, officials met at Cal Poly this weekend to announce new agriculture grants and there's a new Red Cross shelter in Morro Bay for residents displaced by the storm.

The Central Coast is still experiencing rain, but the worst of the storm is likely over.
