A Central Coast landmark is on the path to becoming a National Monument.

A bill introduced in Congress by Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-CA) would permanently protect Piedras Blancas on the northern San Luis Obispo County coast. It's currently designated as an Outstanding Natural Area.

The California Coastal National Monument Expansion Act would include more than 6200 acres of federal lands from Orange to Humboldt County.

Boxer says the designation would help tourism in each of the expanded areas, including San Luis Obispo County where its the largest industry at $1 billion annually.

Central Coast Congresswoman Lois Capps (D-Santa Barbara) says she's happy the PiedrasBlancas Light Station is included in the plan and she looks forward to helping it get passed in the House.
