El Capitan State Beach to reopen Friday

California Department of Parks and Recreation

One of the beaches closed due to May's oil spill off the Santa Barbara County coast will reopen this week. The public will have access to El Capitan State Beach Friday.

Tyson Butzke is the Ventura Sector Superintendent with California State parks.

He said they have worked with several agencies to make sure the beach is clean and safe. Although the beach and campground will be open, the public will be restricted from the pedestrian and water access towards Refugio State Beach.

"The beaches there interconnect so there will be a stretch of beach going up coast from El Capitan to Refugio that will be closed due to work crews and clean up work continuing in the Refugio area," said Butzke.

California State Parks has canceled all camping reservations at Refugio State Beach through July 11, but they still have not determined when they will reopen that beach.
