Residents in the San Luis Obispo County town of Santa Margarita are facing a rise in their water bills, after the county board of supervisors held a hearing Tuesday to hear protests to the proposed increase. Since the county received just 23 written protests out of 500 water customers, the increase went through.

Residents fleeing Hill Fire find refuge at Red Cross evacuation center

As of Tuesday evening, the Hill Fire burning east of Santa Margarita, in San Luis Obispo County, is 60 percent contained. Since the fire started Monday afternoon around 3:30 p.m., it has burned approximately 1600 acres and at least one home in a rural area of the county. Mandatory evacuation orders were issued Monday evening - that order is lifted as of 7 p.m. June 27. KCBX News visited the evacuation center set up by the American Red Cross and there we met resident Marie Burd, who was forced to flee the home she shares with her husband, a Cal Poly professor, on Monday night.

UPDATE 6-27-17 AT 1:00 P.M.: The Hill Fire is 40 to 45 percent contained, with an estimated 1500 acres burned since Monday afternoon.

Cuesta Fire: Not everyone leaves when 'mandatory evacuations' are issued

Those evacuated from the Cuesta Fire are anxiously awaiting word that they can return to their homes.

Weather conditions on Tuesday again gave the Cuesta Fire added strength as it expanded to 2500 acres. CAL FIRE Public Information Officer Bennet Milloy said Tuesday night that containment remained at 10 percent.

"Fire lines are holding, we did early have a little spot over a road that we're using as a containment line, but we did have a retardent line on the other side of that," said Milloy. "So the fire was over the road, but not over our control line.

The size of the Cuesta Fire grew rapidly on Monday. CAL FIRE said Monday night that 500 acres had been scorched since the series of small fires along Highway 101 were first ingited on Sunday night.

CAL FIRE crews are battling the largest wildfire to hit the Central Coast this year. At more than 1200 acres, the Park Hill fire near Santa Margarita in San Luis Obispo County was just 15 percent contained as of Sunday morning. 

A teacher and coach at Santa Maria High School is facing child pornography charges and has been placed on leave by the school district.

The San Luis Obispo County Sheriff's Office says 53-year-old Michael David Smith was arrested Thursday after deputies served a search warrant at his Santa Margarita home.

Rural water customer in San Luis Obispo County could soon be restricted to only Mondays and Thursday for outdoor water usage due to ongoing drought conditions.

The County Public Works Department will present the plan next week to the Board of Supervisors.

Affected areas include Cayucos, Shandon, Santa Margarita, and Avila Valley. Despite calls by the state to reduce water usage by 20 percent, residents in most of these areas are showing usage inline with last year.
