Issues & Ideas: Leadership SLO, the Women's March and financial literacy for high schoolers

On this week’s Issues & Ideas, we get better acquainted with former San Luis Obispo city councilmember Dan Rivoire. He was recently selected to be the new executive director of leadership development for the SLO Chamber of Commerce. He’s tasked with running Leadership SLO, a county-wide program designed to bring participants out of their comfort zones to learn new leadership styles and ways of handling diversity in opinions and people.

And the 2020 Women's March will take place on Saturday, January 18. Marches are planned across the United States and in several global cities, and here on the Central Coast, there'll be marches in San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, and Santa Maria. We speak to two of the Santa Maria march organizers about why they felt it was important to organize in northern Santa Barbara County.

Former CIA operative H.K. Roy speaks with correspondent Tom Wilmer about about his new book, American Spy. Roy’s 14-year career includes pursuing Russian spies, eluding the Iranian Intelligence Service, hunting Bosnian war criminals and many other cloak-and-dagger stories.

Lastly, giving local high school students the skills they need for success in the real world is a goal of San Luis Obispo County's United Way. One example is its financial literacy class for local high school seniors called Money Talks. Contributor Beth Thornton sits down with the CEO of SLO County's United Way and a volunteer educator to discuss the importance of financial literacy.

Tom Wilmer produces on-air content for Issues & Ideas airing over KCBX and is producer and host of the six-time Lowell Thomas award-winning NPR podcast Journeys of Discovery with Tom Wilmer. Recorded live on-location across America and around the world, the podcasts feature the arts, culture, music, nature, history, science, wine & spirits, brewpubs, and the culinary arts--everything from baseball to exploring South Pacific atolls to interviewing the real Santa Claus in the Arctic.
