Cal Poly athletes facing armed robbery charges after weekend arrests

Five Cal Poly football players are facing charges related to an attempted weekend armed robbery at a fraternity house adjacent to campus.

The official university statement says the players were "suspended from all team activities effective immediately" and possible student disciplinary action is awaiting the results of an internal investigation.

The San Luis Obispo Police Department is handling the criminal side. Captain Keith Storton says victims at Delta Sigma Phi fraternity house on California Boulevard reported having a gun pointed at them during the crime, which was reported around 2:30 Sunday morning.

While officers look into a motive for the robbery, KCBX asked whether drugs could have been a target for those involved.

"Information has come forward to us that we need to investigate," said Storton. "None of it has been substantiated, and so at this point in time it would be premature for me to say anything that 'yes, that was the case' but certainly we're looking at all statements that were provided to us and trying to find the exact reasons as to why the suspects went to that location."

Most if not all of the suspects are now out on bail, according to the captain.

Nineteen-year-old Marcel Akins faces the most serious crimes, including robbery with a firearm, assault on a police officer and resisting arrest.
