A sewer improvement project in downtown Santa Maria kicked off this week.
Crews have started their work between Broadway and Depot Street. The City contracted with R. Baker, Inc. for the $1.5 million project.
City Project Manager Manny Guzmán said the goal is to upgrade the sewer system to support new housing and other downtown development.
“It’s the installation of about 2,500 linear feet of a new sewer main, which is going to increase the sewer capacity in a certain section of the city,” Guzmán said. “It is work that is necessary for future development in the adjacent area.”
Construction runs Monday through Friday, from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. and is expected to wrap up on Sep. 19.
Guzmán advises drivers to slow down in construction zones and watch for detours, road closures and no-parking signs.
