Issues & Ideas: Pomegranates, a murder mystery, and a hip-hop orchestra

On this week’s Issues & Ideas, we get a tour of a former military facility off the coastal highway in Big Sur. It's been off-limits to the public until now, and it’s full of Cold War secrets. Also, we get to know JooWan Kim, the composer and pianist behind an avant-garde hip-hop orchestra from Oakland called Mik Nawooj.

At UCSB this week, the group will showcase their seven-piece chamber orchestra, rap, and dancing ensemble that challenges contemporary ideas of classical music. We also speak with local author Jack Cameron about the writing process and his new Central Coast mystery novel, The Storm Drain Murder. And Father Ian goes hunting for pomegranates and some of the best recipes that highlight the fruit.

Brian Reynolds is a contributor to Issues & Ideas, a weekly show that brings listeners a wide variety of perspectives on KCBX. He hosts the monthly segment "Bookwaves," where he interviews fascinating people on a broad range of topics, with a focus on books and writing.
Fr. Ian Delinger hosts "Playing with Food," a monthly segment on "Issues and Ideas" that explores unique ways of looking at and preparing everyday foods on the California Central Coast.
